GreenTech Mobility is an academic capacity-building project designed to strengthen excellence in higher education and research in sustainable and green technologies across Africa. It responds to the growing need for highly qualified professionals capable of supporting Africa’s ecological transition.

Funded by the European Union with €1.44 million over four years (2026–2029) under the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme, the project brings together six African universities and one European university to train 56 experts in renewable energy, the circular economy, sustainable mobility and climate adaptation — building the talent pipeline needed to design, operate and maintain Global Gateway infrastructure across the continent, from Bus Rapid Transit systems and renewable energy plants to sustainable ports and climate-smart value chains.

The project is coordinated by Université Nangui Abrogoua in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Full programme information, calls for applications and application forms are published on the official project website, greentechmobility.org.

Our role

RCEES & UENR in the consortium

The University of Energy and Natural Resources, through RCEES, is a full consortium partner and leads Work Package 3 — Sustainability & Dissemination, the work package responsible for ensuring the project generates lasting impact beyond individual mobility flows.

UENR is also one of the host universities for the doctoral scholarships, receiving PhD candidates from across the consortium and from African institutions outside it. RCEES was represented at the project kick-off meeting in Brussels, where the Centre engaged EU and African partners on capacity development in renewable energy, waste management, smart agriculture and the circular economy.

What Work Package 3 delivers

  • Train 9 PhD graduates, 26 MSc graduates, 9 academic staff and 12 trainees with expertise in renewable energy systems, waste management and sustainable mobility.
  • Strengthen the capacity of partner institutions and stakeholders through training, workshops and knowledge-sharing activities.
  • Disseminate project outputs — research findings, innovative technologies and success stories — across the academic, public and private sectors.
  • Promote the adoption and replication of best practices and innovations developed through the project, so that benefits to partner institutions and communities outlast the grant.
What we’re doing

Programme objectives

  1. Academic excellence — strengthen academic excellence in sustainable technologies at Master’s and doctoral level.
  2. Intra-African mobility — promote high-quality academic mobility between African higher education institutions.
  3. Institutional capacity — enhance institutional capacity for curriculum development and supervision in green technology fields.
  4. Research collaboration — foster research collaboration and innovation in renewable energy, biomass valorisation, environmental technologies and sustainable systems.
  5. Gender equality — promote gender equality and inclusive participation, targeting at least 50% female participation across all mobility categories.
Scholarships

Mobility opportunities

GreenTech Mobility funds 56 mobility flows across four categories. Scholarships cover a monthly subsistence allowance, health and repatriation insurance, travel and visa costs, with additional support available for participants with special needs.

Who can apply

  • Target Group 1 (TG1) — 80% of places, 45 flows. Applicants enrolled, admitted, employed at or graduated from one of the consortium universities in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, Rwanda or Kenya.
  • Target Group 2 (TG2) — 20% of places, 11 flows. Applicants from African higher education institutions outside the consortium, including Cameroon, Ethiopia, Mali, Sudan, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Niger, Zambia, Malawi and Togo.

Applicants must be nationals of a Sub-Saharan African country, be enrolled in or admitted to a Master’s or doctoral programme, submit a complete file (CV, motivation letter, research proposal and academic transcripts), and demonstrate proficiency in the working language of the host institution — English or French. Women, persons with disabilities and candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

How the work is organised

Work packages

WP1Management & implementationLed by Université Nangui Abrogoua

Overall coordination, financial management and strategic supervision of the project, together with the establishment of harmonised training programmes and research agendas for sustainable energy and urban mobility.

WP2Selection & supervisionLed by Kenyatta University

Transparent selection, placement and structured supervision of the 26 MSc students, 9 PhD candidates, 12 trainees and 9 academic staff, with logistics support for participants and monitoring of academic and career outcomes.

WP3Sustainability & disseminationLed by UENR / RCEES

Ensuring lasting impact beyond individual mobility flows through capacity building, workshops, dissemination of research outputs, and the adoption and replication of best practices across partner institutions.

Six African universities and one European university, spanning Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, Rwanda, Kenya, Morocco and Germany.

Calls for applications

2026–2027 doctoral call

The first call under GreenTech Mobility offered nine fully funded doctoral scholarships — 36 months at €1,230 per month, plus full tuition fees, an installation allowance on arrival, and health and civil liability insurance — for study at Université Nangui Abrogoua, Kenyatta University, Catholic University of Rwanda, UNSTIM and UENR. The call was coordinated by Kenyatta University and open to candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa.
