Admission Requirements The Sustainable Energy Engineering and Management (SEEM) programme is open to all applicants having the requisite technical background knowledge: Second degree holders of renewable energy technologies, electrical, environmental, mechanical and energy engineering, sciences, agriculture, and professionals with industry experience.
Admission Requirements
PhD. Programme: To be eligible for admission into the PhD. In the Research Degree programme, candidates must be graduates of this University or any other University recognised by the Academic Board and shall normally have obtained a second degree in the relevant field (eg. renewable energy engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, agricultural engineering, etc). Excellent candidates may be admitted into a research master’s programme in the first instance and later upgraded into the Ph.D. prograame after successful completion of the course work and upon recommendations from the Department and School Boards. For Non-Research Masters Degree candidates, holders of Bachelors degree with a minimum of three (3) years of working experience may be considered for admission. Holders of postgraduate diploma certificates with excellent classification may be admitted to non-research Masters programmes. The Departments may require further selection by examination and/or intervew.
Doctoral Programme: To be eligible for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy degree programme, a student must have obtained a Master’s degree from this University or its equivalent from any other University recognised by Academic Board. Exceptional Second-year M.Phil/MSc students may be upgraded into the Ph.D. programme upon recommendation from the Department and School Boards. In exceptional cases, non-research Masters’s degree holders may be admitted into the Ph.D. programme after successful completion of further 6-12 months supervised postgraduate training programme.
Admission and Selection
The admission and selection process to the Sustainable Energy Engineering and Management programme shall reflect the academic rigor and preparation needed for this programme. Meeting the minimum qualifications for this programme does not guarantee admission. Candidates are encouraged to achieve well beyond the minimum qualifications to enhance their chances of selection. The Energy and Petroleum Engineering Department at UENR uses a holistic approach in selecting candidates for admission. Applicants are thoroughly reviewed to determine the full spectrum of their academic and personal achievements through examination and/or interview.

NB: Special Admissions – A candidate, who does not satisfy the full rigour of academic requirement of a programme but is otherwise adjudged suitable (professional and work experience), may be admitted.

Description / Content

  • The Phd. Sustainable Energy Engineering and Management is run in the Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering, under the School of Engineering. The programme aims to produce graduates with advanced knowledge and skills in energy engineering and management; this will be by providing high-level teaching and research, in an interdisciplinary approach, to deliver a set of skills and competencies in sustainable energy systems. The structure of the Ph.D. course is designed to produce graduates with rigorous research and analytical skills, who will be exceptionally well-equipped to go onto teaching, Postdoctoral research, or employment in industry and the public service.
  • Aside from the core courses, the Sustainable Energy Engineering and Management programme also has a substantial research component. In the first year, each student is required to choose a research topic for an investigation into a specific Energy engineering related issue and submits a proposal in the second semester for consideration by the faculty. After the proposal is accepted, the student will research under the supervision of at least one Lecturer. Students are also required to undergo a mandatory industrial attachment training of at least four (4) weeks in a related organisation for hands-on training.
